Gay soldiers or straight, it doesn't matter. Most Americans know you are patriots who put your lives on the line on behalf of your country. Your commander-in-chief believes you do it for him (at the 1:36 mark):
When I think about those soldiers or airmen or Marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained even now that Don't Ask Don't Tell is gone because they're not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I just concluded that, for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.I suspect, Mr. President, that our fine men and women in uniform would say they are out there fighting on America's behalf. Not yours.
